Western Regional Conference Summary

“Envisioning a Spiritual Mosaic,” Western Regional conference was held at the Church of the Epiphany in Tempe, AZ from April 20-22, 2023. A gathering of approximately 45 individuals came together to explore the theme of the African Diaspora in our beloved community. The conference was co hosted by Province VIII Black African Ministries (BAM) and the AZ Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) and opened with a reception on Thursday, April 20th, which provided an opportunity for attendees to meet and greet one another.

On Friday, the conference featured three speakers who addressed various aspects of the theme. Rev. Dr. Mary Tororeiy spoke about “The Concept of Community in Leviticus: A call to tsedek”, which explored the idea of community as it is presented in the book of Leviticus. Rev. Dr. Chuck Robertson gave an interactive presentation on “The Challenge of Intentional Inclusivity: From the Early Church to Today’s Anglican Communion”, which examined the history of inclusivity in the church and the challenges that remain. Rev. Canon Anita Braden closed out the day with “Beloved Community in Action, Word, and Prayer”, which focused on the personal and practical aspects of building belonging in the beloved community.

On Saturday, the Western UBE Annual Meeting was held, and the Very Rev. Kim L. Coleman, UBE National President addressed the group. The Rev. Dr. Mauricio Wilson also spoke, providing insights into the the value of and need for UBE.

Overall, the Envisioning a Spiritual Mosaic conference was a thought-provoking and engaging event that brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds to explore the theme of the African Diaspora in our beloved community. The speakers provided valuable insights and perspectives, and the opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for building a more inclusive and just community was invaluable. Attendees left the conference feeling inspired and energized, and many are already looking forward to the next Western Regional UBE and BAM conference, which will be held in Los Angeles, CA in April 2024 (after Easter).
